Easy Caramel Sauce {dairy free}

Easy Caramel Sauce is a thick, creamy sauce without using cream or milk. This is the best caramel sauce that can be used as a topping or a dip.

Confession, I don’t like eating apples plain. Back in the day I used to buy a tub of caramel apple dip every time I went to the store, but then I realized that it has some questionable ingredients in it and it’s so easy to just make it yourself. Don’t worry, I’m here to show you how so you can ditch the store bought stuff too!

What Is Caramel Sauce Made Of

This caramel sauce is super easy to make and only uses 4 ingredients (plus water). All you need is full fat canned coconut milk, coconut sugar, vanilla extract and cornstarch!

How To Make Homemade Caramel Sauce

  • In a small stovetop pan, add coconut sugar and water and bring to a boil.

  • Once boiling, add in coconut milk and whisk ingredients together.
  • Bring mixture to a boil again and then reduce heat to a low boil and cook, uncovered, for 25 minutes, whisking occasionally.

  • While mixture is boiling, prepare thickener.
  • In a small bowl, mix together cornstarch and water, making a paste.
  • After caramel mixture has boiled for 25 minutes, add in paste and boil and whisk continuously for 3-4 minutes, till desired consistency.
  • Once desired consistency is reached, remove pan from heat and whisk in vanilla extract.

How Long Does Homemade Caramel Sauce Last

Homemade caramel sauce will last for up to 2 weeks when stored in an airtight container, in the fridge. I recommend storing in a glass mason jar.

Ingredients

  • 1 can unsweetened, full fat, coconut milk 13.66 oz
  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a small stovetop pan, bring coconut sugar and water to a boil. 

    Once boiling, add in coconut milk, whisk and bring to a boil again. 

    Once boiling, reduce heat to a low boil and continue for 25 minutes, whisking occasionally. 

    While caramel sauce is cooking, prepare thickener by mixing cornstarch with 1 tbsp of water in a small bowl, to form a paste. 

    After caramel sauce has cooked for 25 minutes, add in paste and whisk continuously for 3-4 minutes, until desired consistency. 

    Once you reach desired consistency, remove pan from heat and whisk in vanilla extract. 

    Cool and then transfer to an airtight container and store in fridge.
