Sweet & Spicy Brussels Sprouts

If you’re looking for a recipe for sauteed brussels sprouts that combines the sweetness of maple syrup and the spiciness of crushed red pepper, then you’ve come to the right place.

brussels sprouts with bacon

I haven’t always loved brussels sprouts, I didn’t even use to like them. Several years ago I was traveling with a group of girlfriends and we ordered brussels sprouts at dinner one night. They were DELICIOUS and to this day, we all still talk about the brussels sprouts from that trip. This recipe is my attempt to recreate that meal and not to toot my own horn, but I did good!

Oftentimes, brussels sprouts get a bad wrap. If you don’t like them, it’s likely because your only experience has been mushy ones that have been cooked to death, right?! Do yourself a favor and try them one more time and then report back.

How to Saute Sweet & Spicy Brussels Sprouts

  • To start, prepare your bacon. You’ll place your bacon on an aluminum foil lined baking sheet and put it in the oven as you set your oven to 400 degrees, cooking till crispy (usually 15-20 minutes). While your bacon is cooking, you’ll get to work on your sprouts.
  • In a large saute pan, heat your oil & garlic. Once heated, add in thinly sliced onions and quartered brussels sprouts. Set on low heat, cover and let cook till tender, about 20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes.

  • While your sprouts are cooking, your bacon will finish. Take bacon out of the oven and transfer slices to a paper towel lined plate to drain grease. Once cooled, crumble bacon.
  • Once brussels are tender, add in maple syrup, crushed red pepper & salt and stir well to combine.
  • Lastly, add in crumbled bacon and let the flavors simmer together for 5 minutes, uncovered.
  • Remove from heat and serve.
