energy bites

Let’s talk about trail mix for a minute. The best part of trail mix is the nuts and chocolate, right? Raisins are for people who like disappointment (unless they are covered in chocolate). These energy balls are what trail mix dreams are made of. Almonds and cashews blended with raisins and almond butter as the glue to hold them all together. The raisins have a purpose! Add in some m&m’s and your kids are going to eat these right up! They won’t even know they are devouring a snack packed full of healthy fats and nutritional value. These little bites are perfect to have on hand all summer long when they ask for approximately 1 million snacks each day….please tell me this isn’t just my kids?!

Is Eating Trail Mix Bad For You

In general, trail mix is packed full of healthy fats and protein, but it can also be high in sugar. The problem with trail mix, as with many things, is portion control. If you stick to a serving, you’ll be fine, but most people have trouble sticking to just one serving of trail mix because the serving sizes are tiny. These Energy Balls are a perfect solution because they are already portioned out for you and 2-3 will completely satisfy your sweet tooth and fill you up with energy.

What Is Usually In Trail Mix

Typical trail mix consists of nuts, beans (such as peanuts…yes peanuts are considered a bean), dried fruit and chocolate.

How To Make Homemade Trail Mix Energy Balls

  • If you don’t have a food processor, I do recommend investing in one because it will make your life easier! If you have a high powered blender, it can most likely get the job done too.
  • To start, add the slivered almonds, raw cashews and raisins to the food processor and blend on high speed until the nuts and raisins are completely broken down and look like crumbs.

Energy Balls

  • Add in the almond butter and process on high until clumps begin to form.
  • Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl and add in mini chocolate chips and m&m’s (mini or regular size, I used regular).
  • Using your hands, combine the mixture well.
  • Form mixture into bite size energy balls, using a tbsp as a size reference (makes about 24 balls).
  • Place balls on parchment paper lined baking sheet and then place in refrigerator to set up.

  • Store energy balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
