Homemade Taco Seasoning is a quick & easy blend to always have on hand for taco night. The perfect blend of spices to season your tacos, burritos, nachos and more!
If you are still using store bought packets of taco seasoning, you have to stop! This seasoning is so easy to make and it makes taco night taste so much better, trust me. Long before we ever paid attention to nutrition and the way we were eating, we made the switch from taco seasoning packets to homemade seasoning. Once you go homemade, you won’t ever go back! Whip up a big batch of this and keep it in your pantry so it will always be ready to go.
Let’s start by answering some of the most commonly asked questions regarding homemade taco seasoning.
The store bought packets may have some questionable ingredients, but this homemade version is a blend of the following spices, and that’s it!
Chili Powder, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Crushed Red Pepper, Dried Oregano, Paprika, Cumin, Salt & Pepper. Just pour each ingredient (amounts listed in recipe card below) into a glass mason jar, mix it up and store it in your pantry.
When using this homemade seasoning, 3 tablespoons of the homemade mixture is equal to 1 store bought packet.
It varies depending on the recipe you are making, but for traditional beef or chicken tacos, I saute the meat, add in the seasoning and then add in about 1/4 cup of water to the mixture. It’s best to start with a little water and then add more if needed, depending on the consistency/amount of liquid you are wanting.
Lord help me with all the carb questions, but to answer….this homemade seasoning is very low carb, trace amounts really. When buying a store bought packet, it’s very likely that it will have carbs in it because of added fillers that are often found in them, like sugars and starches.
Some store bought taco seasoning packets have MSG and some do not, but the best way to know exactly what is in your seasoning mix is to make it homemade! It’s worth the (very little) effort to make it yourself.
Add all ingredients into a glass mason jar and mix. Store with an airtight lid on it.
